Runner Safety

Last updated: 31 May 2026

Read this before your next run.

Run on Realms (“ROR”) makes running more engaging through gamification — claim realms, capture zones, run with squads. But the running itself happens on real streets, in real weather, with real traffic. Your safety is your responsibility. These guidelines exist to help you stay safe; following them is not optional.

1. Before You Run

  • Tell someone your route. Use ROR's “Share Live Location” with a squad-mate, or text a family member where you're going and when you expect to return.
  • Check the weather. Don't run in lightning, heavy rain, dust storms, or extreme heat (above 38°C with high humidity). Reschedule.
  • Carry water for runs over 30 minutes; a fully charged phone; ID; emergency contact info; cash or a payment method.
  • Wear visible clothing in dawn / dusk / night runs — reflective vest, blinking light. Drivers cannot see what they can't see.
  • Health clearance: If you have heart conditions, asthma, diabetes, are pregnant, or are returning from injury — consult a doctor before starting a running programme.

2. While You Run

  • Stay aware. Avoid loud music in both ears — at least one ear should hear traffic, dogs, people approaching.
  • Run on footpaths or against traffic where pedestrian infrastructure is missing, so you can see oncoming vehicles.
  • Obey traffic signals. A realm or zone is not worth getting hit by a vehicle. Don't cross on red.
  • Avoid isolated areas at night. Stay where there is foot traffic, streetlights, and other people.
  • Hydrate. Drink water every 20 minutes in hot weather. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or stop sweating — stop running, find shade, drink, and seek help.
  • Listen to your body. Sharp pain, dizziness, chest tightness, irregular heartbeat — stop immediately. Sit down. Call for help if needed.

3. Realm & Zone Safety — Important

Realms and zones are virtual boundaries shown on a map. The real world has fences, private property, water bodies, traffic, and dangerous terrain. Never cross a real-world hazard to capture a virtual zone.
  • Do not enter private property, military zones, restricted areas, or construction sites to capture a realm or zone.
  • Do not run on highways, expressways, railway tracks, or areas without pedestrian access.
  • Do not enter water bodies, slum lanes you don't know, or known unsafe neighborhoods.
  • A realm or zone is just digital points. Your life is not.

4. Sharing Location with Others

  • ROR lets you share live location with your squad during a run. You control when this is on/off.
  • Public realm leaderboards show usernames + run stats — not precise coordinates of your home/start point.
  • Run-start and run-end coordinates are coarsened (reduced precision) before being stored or shown publicly, to protect your home/work address.
  • If you feel unsafe sharing location with a squad-mate (harassment, stalking), block them in the app and report via [email protected].

5. Women's Safety

  • Run with a buddy or squad in unfamiliar areas, especially before dawn or after dusk.
  • Vary your routes and times — don't make patterns predictable.
  • Carry a safety whistle or personal alarm.
  • Install the official 112 India emergency app for one-touch emergency calls.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, stop, change direction, head to a populated area, and ask for help.

6. In an Emergency

  • India emergency number: 112 (unified — police, fire, medical, women, child)
  • Medical only: 108
  • Police only: 100
  • Women in distress: 1091
  • Cyber crime / online harassment: cybercrime.gov.in or 1930

If you are injured during a run and unable to call for help, your phone's native SOS feature (iPhone: press side button 5 times · Android: press power 5 times) will call emergency services and notify your emergency contacts. Set these up in advance.

7. What ROR Is — and Isn't

ROR is a fitness tracking and gamification service. ROR is not a safety service. We do not monitor your runs in real-time for safety, we do not dispatch emergency services, and we do not guarantee anyone will respond if you go missing.

Per our Terms of Service §9, you are responsible for your own safety during physical activity, and we are not liable for injuries, accidents, or damage arising from your use of the App. These safety guidelines are provided to help — they do not shift liability from you to us.
